What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a set of one, two, or three fake teeth that replace missing teeth. To secure the bridge properly in place and “bridge” any space between your teeth, it is attached to the neighboring teeth using dental crowns. What are the types of dental bridges?
There are 4 types of dental bridges available:
1. Traditional Bridges
The most popular type of dental bridge is the traditional one. These bridges can be made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramic. These bridges are made up of one false tooth, also known as a pontic. A dental crown is used to hold the bridge in place.

2. Cantilever Bridges

3. Maryland Bridges

Maryland bridges are made from porcelain. The bridges are also equipped with “wings”, which bond to adjacent teeth and keep them stable. Most Maryland bridges today have porcelain wings instead of metal wings. Porcelain is almost identical in color to your natural teeth.
Maryland bridges require less tooth removal because they attach to the backsides of the front teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. It can be used to replace incisors or front teeth. They are not used to replace missing canines or molars as canines are very important for biting, and Maryland bridges can shift or loosen easily.
4. Implant-Supported bridges
Implant-supported bridges can be supported entirely with dental implants and not a metal framework. This type of bridge is used to replace missing teeth such as premolars or molars. Implant bridges are best for patients with at least three missing teeth (back-molars).
Are Dental Bridges painful?
Most dental bridges don’t cause pain. Our dentist in Fall River will use local anesthesia to numb your area while preparing your teeth for a dental bridge. You may feel some sensitivity and pain after the numbing agent wears down. However, over-the-counter pain medication might be enough to make you feel better. What is the process of dental bridge?
Two appointments are required for dental bridge surgery:
First Visit – Tooth Preparation & Temporary Bridge
A local anesthetic will be administered during your first appointment to ensure that you feel comfortable and not in pain.
We will then shape and file the adjoining teeth. All abutments (teeth that support the bridge) are prepared as a dental crown. To make it clear to the other tooth, all enamel and additional tooth structure are removed.
After the teeth have been shaped, impressions of the mouth are taken and sent to a dental lab. Here is where we will create your custom-made dental bridge.
Dentist will temporarily bridge the gap and reshape the teeth while the permanent bridge is being constructed.
Permanent Bridge Placement – Second Visit
You will be able to return for the second appointment once the permanent bridge has been made.
Our dentist will first remove the dental bridge. Next, we will clean your teeth. A local anesthetic may be used if there is pain or sensitivity. To ensure that the bridge fits correctly, our dentist will take x-rays. The bridge is then bonded to the teeth.
