Frequently Asked Questions?

How to care for teeth after the whitening treatment?

There are several steps you can take to take care of your teeth after teeth whitening to make the results last longer. Avoid drinking or eating anything that could stain your teeth. If you do decide to consume these foods or drink them, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth immediately. You can prevent stain buildup by brushing your teeth twice daily and getting biannual cleanings.

Professional Vs. Over the counter teeth whitening?

All whitening procedures, whether performed at home or done in a dentist’s office, rely on the same chemical to penetrate and break down stains in your teeth. The main difference is the cost. Professional whitening is more expensive. When done in the office, our dentist can take measures to protect the gums and rest of the mouth while teeth whitening. Professional whitening treatments take around 1 hour to 1.5 hours.

To protect your gums and tooth enamel, we do not recommend that you have in-office whitening done more than once per year. Over-the-counter teeth whitening cannot give you this benefit, other than being inexpensive.

That said, results of professional whitening in an office can last up to one year compared to at-home whitening results from whitening kits, which last only up to 6 months.

Does the whitening work on Dentures, or Veneers?

The teeth whitening procedure enhances the natural whiteness of the enamel. Existing restorations like tooth-colored fillings, dentures, crowns, bonding, veneers, and bridges do not lighten with this method. This means that any pre-existing dental work may need to be replaced to match the new tooth shade achieved in the natural teeth for this process. Clients typically apply the gel product only to their natural teeth, allowing these treated teeth to lighten up to match a cap, crown, or veneer.

Is teeth whitening painful?

Sensitivity to gums and teeth can result from teeth whitening. Some patients feel little or no sensitivity, while others may have to reduce the intensity and duration of the bleaching in order to avoid any sensitivity.

You may be asked by your dentist to recommend a toothpaste that is safe for use before and after treatment. OTC pain relief can be used to treat sensitivity if you experience it after treatment.
